The catch: not every country licenses the same films, and a VPN does not guarantee access. Here’s how I approach it.
Most people don’t realize that Netflix licenses different shows and films in different countries around the world. Those licenses change, and individual Harry Potter movies do not always move together.
Hogwarts, the iconic school of wizardry in the Harry Potter series, serves as the central setting where Harry and his friends grow, learn magic, and face numerous challenges.
In the US, Peacock offers the Harry Potter film collection. If you already have Netflix, it can still be worth checking a region where Netflix has licensed the movie you want before paying for another service.
The idea is to try another Netflix country catalog through a VPN. First, find evidence that the particular film is licensed there. These are regions to investigate, not a promise that all eight films will appear:

How can you watch a show when you’re not physically in one of those countries?
You need an active Netflix subscription and a suitable VPN plan. I use NordVPN and Surfshark as my preferred streaming options, with Proton VPN as my privacy-focused alternative. These are all services I personally use.

Try another Netflix catalog with your existing subscription. A VPN subscription may cost extra.
The 3-step process, which I’ll explain in more detail below, goes like this:

- Step 2: Connect to a server in a country where the film may be licensed. You may need to try another server or country; connection alone does not establish that Netflix will show the film.
- Step 3: Log in to Netflix, search for the exact Harry Potter movie and try playing it. Check each film separately if you’re planning a marathon.

That’s it! Sure you could stream it on Peacock, but why pay for yet another streaming service if you don’t have to?

Availability of Harry Potter Movies on Netflix
Harry Potter availability varies by film and region – and it changes constantly. Do not assume all eight are licensed together, or that an older UK, Ireland, Germany or Turkey listing still applies.
If the film isn’t available through your chosen country connection, check another current listing or another server. My first choices for streaming are NordVPN and Surfshark; Proton VPN is my choice when I put extra emphasis on privacy. A paid VPN still cannot create a license that Netflix does not have.
Why Harry Potter Films are Not Available in All Regions
The reason why Harry Potter films are not available in all regions on Netflix is due to licensing and copyright agreements (sometimes referred to as “geoblocking”). These agreements vary by region, resulting in different content libraries for each country.
A VPN changes the IP address Netflix sees, which can sometimes expose a different catalog. Netflix may instead recognize the VPN and limit viewing to globally licensed titles, so this is something to try, not a guaranteed unlock.

For those that don’t feel comfortable with the short description above, here’s a more detailed explanation of how to watch Harry Potter on Netflix.
Step 1: Purchase and Install a VPN
It’s possible that you’ve never heard of a VPN before. Don’t worry, it’s nothing to be afraid of, I promise!
A VPN is software installed on your phone, tablet or computer that encrypts and routes internet traffic through a server. You can understand how a VPN works before setting one up.
It may sound weird, but this means that you can literally choose on a map where in the world you want your computer to appear to be browsing from.
Netflix uses location information to determine availability, but VPN connections can be limited to globally licensed titles. VPN viewing is not supported with an ad-supported Netflix experience; check your plan before buying a VPN for this purpose.
There are plenty of VPNs on the market. These are the three I use and would consider here:
- NordVPN (Recommended for Streaming): I’ve used it for years to stream while traveling. It is one of my first choices for trying Netflix country connections.
- Surfshark (Streaming and Value): Another service I use for Netflix and other streaming platforms. Results still depend on the title, server and licensing.
- Proton VPN (Privacy-Focused Alternative): I keep an active account and prefer it when I put extra weight on data privacy. Proton’s streaming support requires a paid plan; don’t assume the free plan supplies this feature.
Each of these services has paid plans, and there are other good VPNs beyond my picks. Compare the VPN cost with the rental or extra streaming subscription you might otherwise buy.
I don’t mind paying for a VPN because I also use it for a private connection at home and on public Wi-Fi. Finding a licensed film through an existing Netflix subscription is an additional use, not a guarantee attached to buying a VPN.
Step 2: Connect to the Appropriate VPN Server
Once you’ve purchased, downloaded and set up a VPN on your computer or device, the next step is to connect to the appropriate server.
Choose a country where the film you want may be available, then connect in your VPN app. A server list or connection screenshot demonstrates the connection step; it does not establish Netflix’s current license for a movie.
As you can see, there are quite a number of servers to choose from (and many more that you could scroll down to find).
Click a server to connect, then check Netflix. If the title is missing or blocked, a different country or server may help, but you may need a different licensed viewing service.
Step 3: Log Into Netflix and Search “Harry Potter”
After you’ve logged in to Netflix with the VPN connected, you won’t see any special notification or indication that you’re connected in a different country.
The catalog may change, or Netflix may limit what appears while the VPN is connected.
IMPORTANT TROUBLESHOOTING TIP
You may need to close and reopen the browser tab or app after changing servers. If Netflix reports a VPN/proxy error, try the provider’s troubleshooting or turn the VPN off to use the catalog available in your location.
Obviously, you’re looking for Harry Potter on Netflix, which you can either browse or search for.
A fast connection helps playback quality, but it does not solve a licensing restriction or VPN block. Search the exact movie title and make sure it actually plays before settling in.
Alternative Streaming Options
If you want the full eight-film collection without checking Netflix countries, Peacock is a straightforward US alternative. Check the subscription’s current catalog before signing up; a separate service means a separate cost.
Outside the US, compare the services licensed in your country. The official franchise guide points Australian viewers to HBO Max. You can also check individual rental or purchase offers on Amazon, Apple TV and other digital stores. Don’t assume an old Binge trial or catalog offer is still available.
Why You Need a VPN to Stream Netflix
Netflix, like pretty much every other streaming service (even smaller services like Crunchyroll), licenses shows and movies and because of this they have to restrict viewing for specific countries.
This is known as geo-restricting or geo-blocking content. It’s regulating who can view content based on their geographic location.
To be honest, it’s pretty stupid.
If I’m paying for a streaming service, I’d love to access everything it licenses. Global licensing feels like long-distance calling back in the day: an awkward set of borders in a connected world. I hope we eventually move beyond it. For now, you can pay for the country-appropriate service or try a VPN country connection where Netflix has what you want.
- Disney+ geo-restricts content.

- HBO Max has its own country availability and licensing.
Pretty much any streaming service you can think of places limits on their content. And one of the few tools we have as consumers is the ability to change our location via a VPN.
